Mount View has a community of diverse cultures and many bilingual students and families. The EAL (English as an Additional Language) program supports and develops newly arrived students who have little or no English language. EAL specialist teachers liaise with classroom teachers, support staff and parents to ensure the program links with individual progress and classroom learning engagements.
The students generally attend small group sessions of EAL to develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. The supportive small group setting allows the students to interact with each other and the teacher. They develop language and learning skills that enable them to function more successfully in the classroom and wider school environment. The program complements the classroom learning by providing intensive instruction and revision of the structure of the English language. An emphasis on understanding and using new class focussed vocabulary assists their oral language, which increases their confidence to interact within their classroom environment. Varied resources, activities and experiences help develop these explicit skills.
