At Mount View Primary School, English is taught through the balance of explicit instruction and inquiry learning.
The English program is characterised through:
- Teaching a variety of comprehension strategies to support students in understanding increasingly sophisticated multi-modal texts.
- Explicit instruction of writing for a range of purposes, using a variety of genres.
- A writer’s workshop approach to develop responses that are language rich and show deep level thinking.
- Both explicit instruction and structured inquiry of spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Small group student focus groups on tasks chosen to meet individual needs and interests.
- Ongoing monitoring and assessment which informs future teaching.
- Learning tasks that are purposeful and engaging.
- Authentically linking English learning to the Unit of Inquiry.
The school also participates in State and National programs, such as Premier's Reading Challenge and Book Week.
