Victorian Essential Learning Standards
English
In English students learn to appreciate, enjoy and use language to develop a sense of its richness and its power to evoke feelings, to form and convey ideas, to inform, discuss, persuade, entertain and to argue. The English domain is centred on the conscious, deliberate study of language in the variety of texts and contexts in which it is spoken, read, viewed and written. Understanding and recognising how language works is necessary for success at school and beyond for an active, informed and fulfilling life in modern Australian society, and the global community.
Students are assessed for their literacy skills soon after enrolment and teachers provide programs to build upon strengths and further develop areas to meet expected standards. From the Prep Year, students begin a journey of growth in knowledge, skills and behaviours, acquiring the ability to be independent and continuing learners for life.
