Guest Artists 2008
Susan Romyn
I am an artist, living in the small coastal town of Aireys Inlet, just outside of Geelong. I have 2 gorgeous children (of course!), Georgia and Nelson, and a wonderful husband, John. They are my greatest inspiration.
Known first as a printmaker, I felt a need a few years ago to branch out from my black and white world- into colour. My first canvases were bizarrely bright and although more subtle now, strong colour has become an important aspect in each artwork. Texture and layering have become more important in the pictures- kind of like how we are as people; the layers and textures of our personalities that make us interesting. This, with a sense of whimsy and often 'tongue in cheek' social comment is what I believe is the essence of my work, the canvases in particular.
I continue to print all the time... and it tends to keep me grounded - the process is seductive and I find that as time goes by, my images have become more adventurous and thought provoking.
Recently I have become captured by the world of vintage buttons. I make jewellery from one of the more humble and utilitarian objects around- and that's quite fun. Everyone seems to have a connection to buttons... memories are stirred and I like the nostalgic aspect to this work.
Themes that I have explored include; motherhood, living in a small town, a sense of community, relationships, and issues of mental health. All of these aspects of daily life I feel that I have handled with an honest and open attitude - and I know that my work touches people whose journey in life has similar attributes. I like to think that my work is thought provoking, validating emotions, and connecting with other people, which I believe is central to how we live in this world. Ultimately, I just want people to enjoy my work, as I do.
I have a new website www.susanromyn.com.au so check it out for the full story.
